ESPINALER: A HISTORY OF TRADITION AND FASHION FOR APPETISERS

Nace Espinaler

1896

BIRTH OF ESPINALER

Espinaler was founded in 1896 when Miquel Riera y Prat settled in Vilassar de Mar (Barcelona). Originally from a farmhouse located near the Espinal Bridge (Argentona, Barcelona), he opened the Espinaler tavern, where wine and vermouth were offered to the townspeople.

The tavern was a typical Mediterranean establishment: small, cozy, and with a rustic, family-friendly atmosphere that has been maintained over the years and from generation to generation.

In 1907, thanks to the expertise of Miquel Riera y Prat, Espinaler opened the tobacco shop, which provided a significant boost to the family business.

FRANCISQUETA
RIERA FORNELLS

His daughter, Francisca Riera Fornells, took over the business. Widowed with four children, she had to cope with the difficulties of the civil war.

1946

JOAN TAPIAS RIERA

Joan Tapias Riera takes over the business and radically transforms it. He begins serving and distributing one of the best vermouths of the era, becoming a benchmark in the Maresme region.

VENTURETA ROLDÓS

Ventureta Roldós, wife of Joan Tapias, creates the legendary Espinaler Sauce formula, a combination of top-quality vinegar, red paprika, black pepper, and carefully selected spices that, over the years, have made Espinaler Sauce world-renowned, thus creating a benchmark in appetiser sauces.

1970

REVOLUCIÓN

Miquel Tapias Roldós, the founder’s great-grandson, took over the reins of the business in the 1970s. He started a revolution in Espinaler, as he began traveling to Galicia to personally select the best seafood at auctions, thus kicking off the marketing of high-quality canned seafood under the Espinaler brand.

2000

EXPANSION

The expansion of Espinaler canned products begins throughout much of Spain, and the 1,300 m3 gourmet store-tavern-warehouse opens in Vilassar de Mar, which won the Best Gourmet Store in Spain award in 2012.

PRESENT

DAVID Y MIKI TAPIAS

Today, David and Miki Tapias, great-great-grandchildren of the founder, are the fifth generation at the helm of Espinaler. They maintain the same philosophy as the first day: to offer a product of the highest quality, prepared and packaged at the optimal time, consolidating themselves as a leading brand in the appetiser world, both nationally and internationally.
